    Elfers, Florida, was once known as Baillie Settlement up until 1909 when the first Elfers post office was established. The original post master was named Levi D. Eiland, his wife ran the post office and was entitled to its naming. Mrs. Eiland named the post office after her mothers maiden name, Elfers. Primarily a citrus booming town, with approximately 2,500 acres of citrus groves, the railroad was extended through Elfers in 1913. It wasnt until 1972, that the depot closed down after a fire destroyed the citrus packing house that was built in 1920. In 1925 Elfers was incorporated into City, a gentleman by the name of Jesse M. Mitchell introduced the bill and in was elected Mayor of Elfers. Mitchell was later to become the Senator. In 1933, during the time of the Great Depression, many residents of Elfers were not able to pay the taxes and were close to losing their properties. Samuel W. Getzen stood up as a candidate to oppose Senator Mitchell and upon winning the election Getzen dissolved the incorporation of the city of Elfers on July 1, 1933.
